Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is a non-invasive overnight contact lens technology that is used to correct myopia (short-sightedness) and slow down its progression. These uniquely crafted contact lenses are worn overnight, gently shaping the cornea to ensure clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses (much like invisible braces for your teeth).
As myopia rates continue to rise worldwide due to increased screen usage and decreased outdoor activities, interventions such as Ortho-K are becoming increasingly prevalent. Clinical studies have shown that Ortho-K can effectively slow the progression of myopia in children, making it a compelling choice for parents who are concerned about their child's long-term ocular health.
Orthokeratology is available in Castle Hill Sydney - led by Dr Timothy Liang & Dr Baz Ghafourian

The price of Ortho-K lenses can differ based on the complexity of the lens, the strength of the prescription, and the extent of follow-up care needed.
The expected cost ranges from $1850 to $2350 for initial supply and fitting of a pair of Ortho-K lenses, including 12 months of aftercare consultations. Each lens has a lifespan of approximately 18 to 24 months before it needs to be replaced.
Custom Design – Ortho-K lenses are customized to fit the specific shape of your cornea, necessitating detailed eye mapping and specialised lens production.
Prescription Complexity – More complex prescriptions or irregular corneas may demand more sophisticated lens designs.
Brand and Material – There are various brands of Ortho-K lenses, with price differences based on the materials used and the technology involved.
All major clinical studies and international Optometry Associations have approved Ortho-K as a safe and effective treatment for myopia in children and adolescents.
Treatment in adults is also recommended for people with an active lifestyle, wanting freedom from daytime vision correction such as athletes, police officers and others who are always on the go! Ortho-K is also a great alternative to LASIK surgery.
Ortho-K lens fitting is a highly customised process aimed at creating a lens that safely and effectively corrects vision overnight, providing clear vision without contact lenses during the day.
We are a provider of leading Orthokeratology brands including Gelflex, Menicon & Eyespace FORGE.
Steps in Ortho-K lens fitting:
1. Pre-fitting assessment and scanning
2. Selection of a diagnostic (trial) lens
3. Order and modify custom lenses as needed (several visits).

How to insert Ortho-K lenses:
1. Wash hands with soap and dry with a lint-free towel
2. Balance the lens on your index finger
3. Put one drop of preservative free ocular lubricant into the lens bowl
4. Lean forward, face parallel to the ground and look down into a mirror
5. Use your other hand to keep lids apart and bring lens straight onto the eye
6. Release slowly and blink - the lens should “stick” in place via fluid suction
How to remove Ortho-K lenses:
1. Wash hands
2. Wet the plunger tip with saline
3. Look straight ahead
4. Pull lower eyelid down
5. Place plunger on the lens
6. Gently pull outward as the lens should release easily
